Core Selection Guide for Pipeline Compensation: Bellows Expansion Joint vs Rubber Expansion Joint

Author:Henan Shengshi New Material Technology Co., Ltd. Click: Time:2026-03-31 15:45:00

In industrial pipeline systems, bellows expansion joints and rubber expansion joints are two core displacement compensation devices. Although both undertake the functions of compensating for pipeline thermal expansion and contraction and absorbing vibrations, they differ significantly in material, performance, and application scenarios. Combining the actual needs of foreign trade export, this article compares the two from three aspects: core parameters, performance characteristics, and selection logic, to help accurately match the working conditions of overseas projects.

I. Differences in Core Parameters and Structure

1. Material and Structure

Comparison DimensionBellows Expansion JointRubber Expansion Joint
Core MaterialThe main body is stainless steel bellows (304/316/316L, etc.), matched with carbon steel/stainless steel flanges, and some have built-in guide cylindersThe main body is synthetic rubber (NR/NBR/EPDM/FKM), with built-in nylon cord fabric/steel wire reinforcement layer, matched with carbon steel/stainless steel loose flanges
Structural FormBellows telescopic structure, including single-wave, multi-wave, hinged, universal types, with limit pull rodsSpherical flexible structure, divided into single-sphere, double-sphere, reducing sphere, realizing connection through rubber elastic deformation
Connection MethodFlange connection, welding connection (commonly used for direct-buried pipelines)Flange connection, clamp connection, threaded connection (for small calibers)

2. Core Performance Parameters

Parameter ItemBellows Expansion JointRubber Expansion Joint
Pressure Range0.1~6.4MPa (strong adaptability to high-pressure working conditions)1.0~1.6MPa (reinforced type can reach 2.5MPa)
Temperature Range-200℃~400℃ (suitable for cryogenic/high-temperature working conditions)Conventional -30℃~120℃; special rubber can reach 200℃
Displacement Compensation CapacityLarge axial compensation (single wave up to 300mm), multi-directional compensation requires customized structureMainly axial compensation, small lateral/angular compensation, single sphere suitable for conventional displacement
Vibration and Noise ReductionGeneral, only attenuate vibration by bellows elasticityExcellent, can reduce noise by 15~25dB and absorb more than 80% of mechanical vibration of pipelines
Medium CompatibilitySuitable for water, steam, corrosive gas, clean medium; special alloy material is required for strong corrosionSuitable for water, weak acid and alkali medium; special rubber is needed for strong acid, alkali and oily medium, which is easy to age and swell

II. Accurate Matching of Application Scenarios

1. Scenarios for Prioritizing Bellows Expansion Joints

  • High-temperature and high-pressure working conditions: such as steam pipelines, heat transfer oil transportation, high-temperature flue gas pipelines, stable operation within 400℃;
  • Strong corrosion/clean medium scenarios: chemical strong acid and alkali pipelines, high-purity water treatment pipelines, stainless steel material is corrosion-resistant and pollution-proof;
  • Large displacement/high-precision compensation scenarios: long-distance heating pipelines, large-scale equipment inlets and outlets, need to absorb large axial displacement;
  • High-pressure gas/oil and gas transportation: metal structure has strong sealing performance, suitable for medium and high-pressure gas systems above 1.6MPa.

2. Scenarios for Prioritizing Rubber Expansion Joints

  • Medium and low-pressure liquid medium scenarios: tap water, circulating water, air conditioning chilled water, sewage treatment pipelines, suitable for working conditions within 1.6MPa;
  • Vibration-sensitive scenarios: water pump inlets and outlets, fan pipelines, ship/locomotive pipelines, effectively isolate low-frequency vibration and protect equipment;
  • Space-constrained/multi-directional displacement scenarios: turning points of complex pipe networks, narrow installation spaces, single sphere can achieve multi-directional flexible compensation;
  • Cost-sensitive scenarios: civil water supply and drainage, ordinary industrial pipelines, procurement cost is about 1/3 of bellows expansion joints, and later maintenance is convenient.

III. Summary

There is no absolute advantage or disadvantage between the two, and only need to match the working condition requirements: select bellows expansion joints for high-temperature, high-pressure, strong corrosion and large displacement scenarios; select rubber expansion joints for medium and low-pressure liquid, vibration-sensitive and cost-sensitive scenarios.
